Yoon Hyungtaek Solo Exhibition

Fondness

The exhibition, <Fondness> is curated to explore the artistic world of artist Yoon Hyung-Taek, who records moments of accumulated happiness in everyday life. This large-scale solo exhibition, held simultaneously in Seoul and Busan, showcases over 50 artworks that reflect the artist’s distinctive and heartwarming story.

For the artist, everyday life consists of moments that accumulate in the past as they occur and interact, and these accumulated past moments gradually shape the present. The exhibition’s title and theme, ‘Fondness’, refers to the emotional layers of moderate joy and warmth that build up in such everyday life, rather than overwhelming happiness or warmth that comes all at once.

This exhibition focuses on new paintings that have been enriched with warm emotional moments. While the artist portrays his own life, ultimately it becomes a story for all of us. Sharing our own ‘Fondness’ with others by experiencing this exhibition. This is the vision of art and desire that the artist wants to suggest to us.

Yoon Hyungtaek’s Artist’s Note

"해변=지금"

So, how important is the present.

Isn’t it?

“If we remain faithful to the present moment and do our best, the future we desire will surely come.”

The more time we spend with something or someone, the more a range of emotions emerges and builds up between us. Warmth, excitement, comfort, trust, and other feelings gradually accumulate and solidify, giving way to a deep sense of fondness. Thus, ‘Fondness’ represents the culmination of those kind moments that have remained by our side.

Artist’s Note. Kim Sunwoo’s Journey to Greece

Even when embarking on a journey with a predetermined destination and tasks to accomplish, the act of venturing into unfamiliar places presents us with alternative choices that differ from our everyday lives. It is probably because of this that we find freshness even in the small parts we encounter during our travels. We once again pay our attention to things we usually overlook and discover different answers. My work is driven by the desire for our lives to always be as fresh and exhilarating as a journey. Of course, wandering and setting off to unfamiliar places are not always joyous endeavor. It requires not only the courage and determination to face unpredictable fears and events but also significant investments of time and money, highly valued in our capitalist society. Nevertheless, I still choose to leave my comfort zone. There may be people who have not experienced the feast of new ideas and imagination unfolding on countless roads outside the set road, but there is no person who has indulged only once in this world.

I am soon to be departing for the island of Crete in Greece. It is the birthplace of the Minoan civilization, known as one of the oldest civilizations in Europe, and the land where Zeus, the king of Greek mythology, was born. Actually, this trip was decided impulsively, but at the same time, for obvious reasons. It is the place where my favorite novelist, Haruki Murakami, stayed for a long time, penning “Norwegian Wood” and “Dance Dance Dance” It is also the birthplace and writing ground of Nikos Kazantzakis, the author of “Zorba the Greek”, and the setting of the myth of Icarus who ventured too close to the sun causing his wax wings to melt, leading him to a perpetual plunge into the deep sea. So for me, there are no reasons not to leave for the island of Crete. Amidst the Aegean Sea’s myriad of islands, bathed in the warm glow of Helios, I shall bring tidings from a location where many passionate souls have stayed.
