Chung Shin’s Journey to Arles

Following Van Gogh’s Sunflowers to Arles

Could there be anyone who doesn’t know Van Gogh? What is it that moves us about him? Until his premature departure from this world at the age of 37, he faced internal struggles, engaging in intense and solitary battles himself. Having made the lifelong decision to live as a painter, his existence is narrated through poignant letters and artworks, with the unwavering support of his brother Theo, as he continued to wield his brush until his final moments.

To me, Vincent is a fellow artist. His letters are like an artist’s notes. The story he told to Theo is ultimately an endless series of questions thrown at Vincent himself. Each line of his letters contains numerous worries, commitments, questions, anger, and happiness that he experienced while painting. Reading his letters makes me feel as if I am having a conversation with him. It is probably an emotional resonance that arises from the process of posing endless questions to oneself and finding answers.

I feel Vincent’s obsessive persistence is an infinite love for the human spirit. He loved humanity fiercely and sacrificed himself to a heartbreaking extent. At that time, there were not many people who truly understood this purity. But now, we all love him. Unbiased art reminds us that we are all connected as human beings. From his art, which tells stories of the nobility and love of pure human beings, I feel gratitude and happiness in everyday life.

Life is heavy and challenging for all of us. But we continue to grow, philosophize about life, and support each day. Just like my hand leaving charcoal marks and creating a path on the canvas, Van Gogh’s life and our lives are drawn and severed, only to be connected again. I am following in the footsteps of Van Gogh under the hot sun in Arles. The vast fields and trees he saw, the sanatoriums and hospitals that provided moments of rest, the cafes in Arles that soothed his exhausted body with coffee, the shimmering waters of the Rhône that comforted his loneliness, and the abundant sunflowers he painted, never losing hope even in the dark moments of life. I am walking on the path he walked with my own two feet. In this place, I can feel his presence no matter where I look. Starlight, flowers, and sunlight continue to speak to me as if they have become Vincent himself.
