In the Paris Cité Studio

Summer in Paris resembles autumn, with its cool breezes and unexpected drizzles, as opposed to the hot and humid environment of a Korean summer studio. The dry, lower temperatures create an ideal atmosphere for indoor painting. Even within the heart of Paris, the Cité Internationale des Arts residence acts as a hub for artists worldwide, providing a space for them to stay and continue their creative endeavors. I could overlook the city's bustling streets through large window in my studio located on the second floor. People greet each other from the window and even during the night, the city lights remained persistently shine. Upon my initial entry to the studio, I envisioned transforming the entire space by coating the white walls in a warm yellow. To do this, I went to a nearby IKEA, bought two yellow bedspreads, cut it to fit the walls, and hung them up to smooth out the creases. The studio, now tinged with yellow, felt much cozier.

Afterward, I bought a bunch of sunflowers and a bundle of eucalyptus from a nearby flower shop. The sunflowers, arranged in a vase, emitted a vibrant and energetic aura. I also placed the lemons I had bought in a basket from the supermarket yesterday. The studio was filled with shades of yellow, and I carefully positioned the still objects here and there. This unexpectedly autumnal summer studio, unlike anything I had experienced in Korea, inspired me through its temperature, humidity, light, people, city, and air. As the sounds outside the studio become more familiar, a portion of the world I am depicting is gradually revealing itself, which will have various influences on my upcoming work. The summer in Paris is closer to romance than passion.
