ARTIST FILM.

In Singapore, where every season feels like summer, another ordinary day begins by the window, awakening to the mysterious energy of the jungle. Join artist Jaemin Lee's stroll where swaying palm leaves, sparkling azure pool with refreshing dew, the cries of unknown animals, and the fragrance of fantasy coral fill the air. The essentials for this journey are bare feet, an easel, and a canvas. Walk anywhere with the warm breeze, and a new landscape unfolds.

Jaemin Lee's Artist Note

The landscape outside my studio window holds countless relationships and stories. My neighbors, who were once 'foreigners' with different races, religions, and cultures, have, over the course of the ups and downs during the pandemic, broken down walls and raised each other's children together.

Between windows, hidden are numerous stories we have shared. My endearing neighbors, encountering large lizards while strolling through the dusky jungle, and unfamiliar forms of fauna—all guide me beyond the familiarity of sensations into the world of the exotic.

As a painter, the shift in my artistic ground has become an opportunity to deconstruct the familiar senses and embrace new perspectives. I endeavored to accumulate the colors of Singapore, the landscapes, the forms of trees, and changes in the air as pictorial elements.

When looking at new sensations and foreign cultures, I continually question whether my perspective carries inherent biases. While instinctual fears and reservations as a human towards the unfamiliar world may persist, the gaze of an artist should unhesitatingly accept the unknown and translate it into artwork.

Life always takes us to different realms. Today, once again, I can encounter a stranger standing alone beyond the window. To me, the 'exotic' is a world that allows for yet another unfolding story, a 'lived' world.
